General notes Proofs

Harradine (1987) describes various proofs received in Manila.

Details of the supporting documentation to the notes are believed to be lost but were oringally provided to Peter Harradine by Warren Browne. Harradine reports that some examples are represented in the Tapling Collection; however, this fact appears to be erroneous.

 

January 1890

2c - 5 proof sheets, in dark red

5c dark blue - 5 proof sheets

10c - 5 proof sheets, in dark green

20c - 5 proof sheets, in crimson

3 sheets of each value were perforated and 2 were imperforated.  The sheets were reportedly ungummed, but were subsequently gummes by a Sr Enrique Brias. No proofs were received for the 2 4/8c, 8c, 12 4/8c and 25c issues.

 

April 1891

10c - 5 proof sheets, in violet

25c - 5 proof sheets, in olive

No proofs were received for the 20c issue.

 

February 1892

1c - 5 proof sheets, in black

2 4/8c - 5 proof sheets, in blue

5c - 5 proof sheets in lilac

8c - 5 proof sheets in emerald green

12 4/8c - 4 proof sheets, in dark green

15c - 5 proof sheets, in myrtle-green

No proofs were received for the 2c, 6c 10c and 20 issues. However 50 sheets of imperforate stamps for sample purposes 2c violet, 8c ultramarine 20c dark brown.

 

June 1894

2c  5 proof sheets, in grey-green

8c - 5 proof sheets in intense rose

15c - 5 proof sheets in grey-black

No proofs were received for the 6c and 20 issues.

Later in 1894 other proof sheets were received but were destroyed by fire and no longer exist (2 4/8c black, 12 4/8c cardinal red, 15c bright green and 25c intense borwn-red.

 

March 1896

2c  50 sample sheets, in pale brown

5c - 10 sample sheets in blue-green

8c - 5 sample sheets in deep red

10c - 5 sample sheets in magenta

15c 5 sample sheets in ochre

No proofs were received for the 1c and 20 issues.

Also reported are several hundred sample sheets in varying values and rather gorgeous hues which included 2c in grey brown and 5c blue green (both imperforate and ungumed.
