F-001 Segui Forgery 5c deep blue green

Probably an attempted forgery of the 1896 5c blue green. The forgery was produced by Miguel Segui. It occurs imperforate and on thin opaque soft white or yellow paper. A few examples are known which include an imperforate block of four on white paper

It is listed by Graus (1983). However, there are at least two varieties of this forgery, probably representing different cliches in the master block

Type 1 (described by Graus) and Type 2

Description  Forgery  Genuine
The details of the upper right-hand ornamental cusps are unfilled, similar to cliché type II. However, the genuine 5c issue only occurs as cliché type I
On Type 1 the vertical white line of upper left ornamental scroll is closed at base and the lower end does not protrude to the left
The nose and upper lip are too white (the nose only has two horizontal dots for shading)

The forgery is imperforate whereas the genuine issue is perforate. Genuine proofs do however exist imperforate

There are also other characteristic features to aid identification of these forgeries. Such as a flyspeck above”D” in ‘DE PESO’ (in Type 1), a line break on the inner line of the lower right cartouche and flyspecks on the bust (Types 1 and 2).

F-002 Forgery 5c 'violet black'

An attempted forgery to create a stamp that would match the description of 5c violet black that is described in some catalogues. The forgery has been created by utilitisng a 5mil impresos stamp and replacing labels possibly using a 40c violet black. Only one example is known and was possibly produced by a collector wishing to fill a gap in their album.

Described by Palmer (PPJ 2023-3). The most obvious tell is the ommision of the upper right-hand cartouche but there are other errors in the spacing of the bottom label as will as mismatched frame lines

Possible Forgeries not seen

Lang-Valchs (PPJ 2022-3) describes illustrations in the 1892 catalogue of Swiss forger Adrien Champion which he attributes to a collaboration with the forger Placido Ramon de Torres

Lang Valchs speculates that it is possible that Torres made lithographic proofs which were included in stamp packets distributed by Torres. These may have been lost over time.
